German TV is carefully supervised by the political parties to ensure a balance of views. The main channels, ARD and ZDF, have a reputation for safe programing, but the arrival of satellite and cable TV and competition has begun to make TV more lively. Newspapers are mostly regional and serious. An exception is "Bild Zeitung," the right-wing, sensationalist tabloid, which sells four million copies daily.
